Let's Start Your ProjectA six-week, four-building fire alarm upgrade — MXL to XLS on a Fire Department deadline.
Yahoo Inc. is an internet corporation based in the United States that operates a popular search engine and web portal along with a number of other internet services — about 700 million users visit their website each month.
Howell Electric was selected to upgrade the fire alarm systems at the Sunnyvale Yahoo campus, which consisted of four mid-rise 80,000 sq ft buildings. The project was completed in six weeks from design to final acceptance testing for all four buildings. Howell Electric ran two shifts (day shift and swing shift) in order to meet the deadline issued by the Sunnyvale Fire Department. The systems were upgraded from Siemens MXL to Siemens XLS with integrated Voice Evacuation.
Systems Delivered
Multiplex Addressable System with Fiber Network
- Upgraded from Siemens MXL to Siemens XLS — a fully addressable multiplex fire alarm system networked across all four 80,000 sq ft mid-rise buildings via fiber.
- Fiber backbone delivers resilient, high-speed signaling between buildings for campus-wide coordinated alarm and response.
Voice Evacuation
- Integrated voice evacuation messaging added during the XLS upgrade for clear, intelligible occupant notification.
- Coordinated across all four buildings to deliver synchronized, building-specific evacuation messaging.
Air Handler and Fire Smoke Damper Control Interface
- Full interface with building air handlers and fire smoke dampers for automated smoke control on alarm.
- Engineered to coordinate HVAC shutdown and smoke containment across the campus during a fire event.
